Preparation
They start out by taking a complete set of high resolution intraoral and facial photographs. This is not done solely to document your starting point, but, to help them early on identify and eliminate any potential impediment to achieving an outstanding result. Detailed intraoral and extraoral examinations are performed to help ensure that the treatments proceed as smoothly, efficiently and predictably as possible. By taking care to minimize likely roadblocks [i.e., potential sources of sensitivity] and working together, you will reliably achieve the results you want.

General Comments
While training as a dentist [early 1980s], it would have been unimaginable for Dr. Davis to think that teeth whitening [tooth bleaching] would be one of the procedures that the patients, staff and he would find so gratifying. While there were prior attempts, 1989 is generally recognized as the start of the modern era of successful teeth whitening. Various methods and protocols can be successfully followed to achieve a brighter and cleaner smile. The one common characteristic that all techniques share is that they use either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Carbamide peroxide, sometimes referred to as urea peroxide, is an oxidizing agent which combines hydrogen peroxide with urea. The key to the overall success of the process is to keep the active ingredients against the enamel layer of the tooth for as long as possible, without eliciting any sensitivity.

There are three basic methods to lighten teeth; in-office, at-home and a combination of the first two. The majority of our patients choose the third choice, the combination method, commonly referred to as power whitening. Don’t be misled by those who espouse that their way “is the only way.” Patients can and do consistently achieve long lasting results with any of the methods. Typically, 3-5 in-office visits spaced about a week apart, 12-20 at-home treatments over a 2-3 week period, or 1 in-office followed by 6-10 at-home treatments over a 1-2 week period are required to achieve long term results.

The strengths of the solutions will vary. For the at-home whitening, depending on your situation and needs, you will likely be provided with more than one of the following strengths of solution: 10%, 16%, 22% 30% or 45%. The duration of each treatment may last from 30 minutes to 4 hours. While quite a challenge, they pride themselves on being able to lighten unevenly shaded teeth, allowing them to blend together. Home care regimens are customized to make sure the results are pleasing, easily maintainable, and long lasting. So don’t be surprised if a friend of family member is given slightly different instructions than you were.
